A Beginners Guide to Selecting the Right Athletic Shoes

The shoes that are used for any sports activity or physical training are called athletic shoes. The importance of a well-fitted pair of shoes is widely known, especially to athletes. Each athlete’s needs and wants regarding the performance are different.

If by coincidence, two athletes are looking for a pair of shoes with the same features, what works for one may not work for the other person. This is because choosing the right pair also depends on athlete’s weight, the shape of his or her feet and the biomechanics of movement.

The Types
Different kinds of athletic shoes are used for different activities such as running, walking, cross-training and other general aerobic activities. Athletic court shoes are used for court play for games like tennis and basketball. Athletic cycling shoes are used for mountain cycling and road cycling.

A word of advice to choose sports shoes online
For a beginner, finding the perfectly fitting sports shoes online is not a cumbersome task. Following are a few tips to find the right pair.

1.    Analyze the shape of your feet
The best way to do this is the wet paper test. Wet your foot and imprint it on a piece of brown paper and trace it out. If you notice only a minor part of your feet, you have a high arc, and if you see a significant part of your foot that means your feet are flat.
On the other hand, if you see a distinct curve on the inside your foot, you have an arch which is medium.

2.    Find your type of Pronation
Pronation is the mechanics in which your feet move. If your foot moves inwards, every time it makes contact with the ground, it is called over-pronation. It can be anywhere between mild to severe. Athletes with mild over-pronation are very familiar and in most cases they have a medium arch.

If your foot rolls a little outwards, every time it hits the ground, it is under pronation. In such cases, a person pushes the step from his small toes. It appears commonly in people with high arches.

A neutral pronation is when your foot remains in a uniform state each time your feet hit the ground. It is usually seen in people with flat feet or medium arches.
